Bricks & Mortar
The Illinois hospital community is in a building boom. Over the last two years, we have seen 31 hospitals and health systems spend or prepare to spend over $3.6 billion on hospital replacement, modernization and expansion. These organizations are addressing our aging health care infrastructure to serve our aging population. This is an encouraging and healthy sign for hospitals and for Illinois.

Consolidations
Since the beginning of 2011, we have seen 10 consolidations launched or completed involving 24 Illinois hospitals. More than half of the hospitals in Illinois are now in systems. We expect to see consolidations continue in the coming months as hospitals seek additional capital to help them become care coordinating organizations that deliver better care for less.

Emergency Care
Illinois hospitals are essentially in the emergency care business today. While Illinois inpatient care and outpatient surgery volumes have been relatively flat since 2007, ED visits are more than twice this volume. And Medicaid covers the lion's share of emergency care. Our emergency care volume is clear evidence that our current health care system is neither preventive nor convenient. Until the medical home and care coordination experiment gets off the ground, managing what is going on in hospital emergency rooms will be an essential feature of successful hospitals.
