Illinois Community Hospitals at a Glance
Illinois' community hospitals range from nationally-known academic medical centers and teaching hospitals that offer highly specialized care, train tomorrow's doctors and nurses, and conduct medical research, to inner-city, urban and suburban community hospitals that transform medical and technological advances into better lives for their patients, to small and rural facilities and Critical Access Hospitals that bring high-quality care to the less populated regions of our state and are vital to the health and well-being of their communities. Every year, our state's 192 community hospitals:
- Admit 1.6 million inpatients.
- Treat almost 84,153 outpatients every day -- more than three times the number of patients staying in Illinois hospitals on any given day.
- Treat 5.1 million patients in their emergency departments.
- Perform more than 1.1 million surgical procedures, more than 64% of them on an outpatient basis.
- Welcome more than 174,000 new babies into the world.
- Provide $1.5 billion in uncompensated care - essential health care services for people who have no insurance or are underinsured and are unable to pay for their care.
- Provide meaningful job opportunities for more than a quarter of a million workers and pay them $14.8 billion in wages and benefits. Hospitals are the largest employer in many communities, and among the top 3 employers in 48 of the State's 102 counties. The total economic impact of Illinois hospitals is more than $75 billion a year.
- Provide community service opportunities to more than 90,000 volunteers, who donate almost $14 million annually to Illinois hospitals.
