Judge Rules in Provena's Favor on Tax Exemption

On Friday, July 20, a circuit court judge in Sangamon County in Springfield granted Provena Covenant Medical Center’s motion to reverse the Illinois Department of Revenue’s decision revoking Provena’s property tax exemption for the tax year 2002.

Judge Patrick J. Londrigan ruled in Provena’s favor after hearing oral arguments from Patrick Coffey for the hospital and Assistant Attorney General John Simpson for the department.

Statement from IHA President Ken Robbins:
"We have believed all along that the Department of Revenue’s administrative law judge correctly ruled in Provena Covenant Medical Center’s favor. Given the vast amount of benefits that Provena provides to its community it is clear that Provena is charitable and is tax exempt.  We are pleased that the Judge came to that conclusion.  We hope the Department of Revenue accepts this decision, does not prolong the damage to this hospital, and puts the controversy over hospitals' tax-exempt status to rest."
