Community Benefits Act: June 30, 2005 Filing and Public Notice

The Illinois Community Benefits Act requires certain hospitals to file an annual report within six months of the close of the hospital’s fiscal year. According to our records, your hospital’s first annual report is due to the Illinois Attorney General’s office by June 30, 2005. This report should include the following documents: mission statement, community benefit plan, amount and types of community benefits provided, and audited financial statements.

In an effort to assist member hospitals, we are asking that hospitals send a copy of their annual report submitted to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office to the IHA.

Additionally, the Act requires each hospital to have a public notice that their annual community benefit report is public information and can be obtained by contacting the Illinois Attorney General. The IHA has developed a sample public notice form (see attached) that is currently under review by Therese Harris, Chief of the Charitable Trusts Bureau. She has indicated that hospitals may use this suggested public notice until such time as hospitals are provided one from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. The IHA is suggesting that this notice be posted in Admissions/Registration, Emergency Room and Billing areas.
