Color-Coded Wristbands Patient Safety Initiative

IHA and MCHC have developed a toolkit for hospitals that choose to standardize wristband colors and text. The standardization initiative is voluntary, and does not require those hospitals that presently do not use color-coded patient alert wristbands to adopt the practice. To date, more than 30 states have standardized color-coded patient alert wristbands in hospitals. Colors are used to communicate alerts to caregivers regarding allergies, do not resuscitate and risk to fall. See below for information and resources, including the tool kit.
