Continuing Education

  • Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove
    In the six months, from January to June 2006, approximately $10,000 was paid out by the hospital to support 59 clinical associates.

Direct Program Subsidies

  • Alton Memorial Hospital, Alton
    Alton Memorial Foundation is pledging $2.5 million toward a $14.5 million construction project at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL. A new nursing facility will be constructed with the anticipation of attracting increased student enrollment in health care. The nursing center is expected to open in 2007.
  • Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur
    Subsidizes two faculty positions at $55,000 each that allow 40 additional students into local community college nursing program.
  • Hillsboro Area Hospital, Hillsboro
    - Provides rent-free classroom space to local area colleges and high school health care training classes.
    - In partnership with Lincoln Land Community College and high school, health occupation programs are subsidized with free rent of space and equipment.
  • McDonough District Hospital, Macomb
    Provides $30,000 and MSN nurses to support local community college programming.
  • Nine DuPage Area Hospitals
    Since 2003, hospitals have supplied MSN staff as adjunct faculty to College of DuPage with an increase in enrollment by 27 nursing students into three new clinical rotations.

Forgivable Loan Programs

  • Pinckneyville Community Hospital, Pinckneyville
    Offers a forgiveness program to returning students who work for a specific number of years at Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Student schedules are taken into account for those who are enrolled in classes and work simultaneously.
  • St. Mary’s Good Samaritan, Inc., Centralia
    Offers a Forgivable Loan Repayment program that pays the full cost of a two-year nursing program at Rend Lake College, a two-year work commitment is required after graduation. The loan pays for the entire nursing program, provides part-time employment, experience while attending school, and guarantees employment upon graduation. If a scholarship recipient fulfills his/her two-year obligation, the loan is forgiven. If a recipient fails to meet his/her two-year commitment, he/she must repay the full amount of the loan.

Scholarship Funding

  • Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, La Grange
    - Offers the Harold & Leona Ford Nursing scholarship annually to one or two full-time nursing students. A commitment to one full-year of employment as an RN is required.
    - After one year of employment, offers part-time employees who are eligible, up to $1,750/year and full-time employees up to $3,500/year.
  • Edward Hospital & Health Services, Naperville
    - The Edward Foundation has awarded Agnes A. Book Memorial Nursing Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each to 20 Edward Hospital employees. The Foundation this year quadrupled the number and amount of Book Memorial scholarships in an effort to alleviate the current and projected shortage of nurses and nursing educators. The 20 scholarships were given to Edward Hospital employees who are entry level nursing students, RNs pursing BSNs, and nurses pursuing advanced nursing degrees.

  • Greenville Regional Hospital, Greenville
    The Viola Thompson Scholarship Committee offers financial assistance to any person pursuing a health care profession. Scholarships are awarded twice a year and applied toward tuition, fees, books, or room and board. If a recipient fails to meet his/her commitment, he/she must repay the amount within two years.
  • Hamilton Memorial Hospital District, McLeansboro
    -
    Offers an Educational Assistance Program to employees with at least six months of service. Employees in certain health care fields are eligible for paid tuition, books, and related fees, in exchange for future service to the hospital.
    - Offers an Educational Assistance Program to high school graduates of Hamilton County Senior High School. Graduates in certain health care fields are eligible for paid tuition, books, and related fees, in exchange for future service to the hospital.
  • Harrisburg Medical Center, Harrisburg
    Offers a $5,000 per year scholarship program for five nursing students and pays the nursing board exam fee, provided the student passes on their first attempt. The student is guaranteed a position upon graduation and must agree to work at Harrisburg Medical Center one year for every year of educational assistance received.
  • Hillsboro Area Hospital, Hillsboro
    - Each year offers five health care scholarships to local high school graduating seniors.
    - Several health occupation scholarships are offered annually through the Foundation and Hospital Auxiliary. Currently, one family practice-bound medical student is being sponsored. In 2007, the Foundation will offer additional scholarships for medical students.
  • Morrison Community Hospital, Morrison
    Morrison Hospital Auxiliary hosts a golf outing to raise funds for scholarships. Individuals studying in any health care field are eligible. The number of scholarships awarded is limited by the financial resources in a given year.
  • Pana Community Hospital, Pana
    The Harold/Grace Brown Scholarship is awarded annually to a student pursuing a career in health care.
  • Pekin Hospital, Pekin
    - Hospital and medical staff developed the Francis Tollensdorf Nursing Scholarship ($1,000) per year in memory of a long-time nurse given to a nursing student.
    - A new $3,000 scholarship is offered to students in medical school.
    - The Pekin Auxiliary League offers ten $500.00 scholarships yearly to assist students in the health care field.
  • Pinckneyville Community Hospital, Pinckneyville
    Offers a scholarship program to students enrolled in nursing, x-ray technology, laboratory technology, respiratory therapy and other selected health professions.
  • Red Bud Regional Hospital, Red Bud
    The St. Clement Foundation offers a scholarship program to area students entering the health care field.
  • Saint Anthony's Health Center, Alton
    Partners with Lewis and Clark Community College, the Nursing Excellence Scholarship is awarded to selected students with financial support for tuition, books, and fees related to completion of a nursing degree. Repayment costs are waived in exchange for a commitment to employment with Saint Anthony's Health Center upon graduation and licensure. Candidates for the Nursing Excellence Scholarship must be enrolled in the LCCC Nursing program.
  • Southern Illinois Healthcare (Hamilton Memorial Hospital District, McLeansboro; Harrisburg Medical Center, Harrisburg; Herrin Hospital, Herrin; Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, Carbondale; St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Murphysboro; and, St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Inc., Centralia)
    - Offers scholarship programs to qualified applicants to cover tuition, lab fees, books, and educational supplies. Scholarship recipients are required to sign a contractual work agreement stating that they will work for SIH after graduation. The length of the work agreement depends on the amount awarded to each scholarship recipient. Those who leave their educational program or choose to work elsewhere after graduation are required to repay the scholarship to SIH as a loan. Designated health care careers include health information technology, medical lab technology, radiological technology, registered nursing, respiratory therapy, surgical technology, and physical therapy SIH sponsors up to a two-year program.
    - Offers RN to BSN scholarship to a SIH employee who meets the established criteria and who signs a contractual agreement with SIH; receives a four-year commitment of $20,000. Recipient must consider a BSN position in the event one becomes available and the recipient is qualified.
  • St. John's Hospital, Springfield
    - Offers Perry Nursing Scholarship to RNs completing an accredited BSN or MSN degree program; pay out is up to $5,000 with a maximum of $20,000 per calendar year.
    - Offers Sister Francis Cooke Nursing Scholarship which includes salary support plus the total cost of tuition, fees, and books for a master of science in nursing. A work commitment following completion of the degree is required.

Tuition Reimbursement and Program Support

  • Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, La Grange
    - Offers tuition reimbursement up to 100% for work or health care-related undergraduate or graduate study.
    - Partners with Elmhurst College to offer a special tuition reimbursement plan for a BSN completion program to eligible nurses after one year of employment.
  • Condell Medical Center, Libertyville
    Full financial support and tuition reimbursement is offered to employees seeking a health care career. Scholarships are awarded to students completing the Penwasciz program.
  • Greenville Regional Hospital, Greenville
    - Financial assistance is offered to full-time and part-time staff members who are accepted into an appropriate health care program and working toward a health care certification.
    - Full-time and part-time staff may receive tuition reimbursement for correspondence and continuing education courses. Approval is on a first-come, first-serve basis and reimbursement is only for tuition.
  • Harrisburg Medical Center, Harrisburg
    Offers a $5,000 sign-on bonus for the education loan program, to help with outstanding student loans and other education expenses. Radiology, occupational therapy, and respiratory therapy are health care fields which students may apply for education loans or sign-on bonuses.
  • Hillsboro Area Hospital, Hillsboro
    - Offers tuition reimbursement for employees pursuing health care careers.
    - Offers partial tuition reimbursement for health career advancement for staff.
  • Morrison Community Hospital, Morrison
    Offers tuition reimbursement to full-time and part-time employees who have completed three months of employment.
  • Mount Sinai Hospital, Chicago
    - Offers staff nurses two education days a year.
    - Offers RNs up to $4,000 tuition reimbursement.
    - Offers onsite day care through the Sinai Community Institute.
  • Pana Community Hospital, Pana
    Full-time and part-time employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement for approved courses. Correspondence courses and online courses are also considered. Reimbursement is up to 80% per course per calendar year with a limit of $1,500 for full-time and $750 for part-time employees.
  • Pekin Hospital, Pekin
    Offers an active tuition reimbursement program and is available for both full-time and part-time staff. 
  • Red Bud Regional Hospital, Red Bud
    -
    Subsidizes the local LPN program by performing background checks for students. Provided local schools with classroom space during a power outage.
    - Offers employees enrolled in school a $2,500 per year in tuition reimbursement.
    - Participates in the Critical Skills Shortage Initiative program supporting one student by providing tuition reimbursement and flexible scheduling.
  • Saint Anthony's Health Center, Alton
    Offers full-time employees pursuing job-related studies or courses that lead to a promotion or transfer. Part-time employees are eligible if pursing health care areas of study.
  • Sherman Hospital Rescue Program, Elgin
    Offers tuition reimbursement or part-time flexible work schedule program for roughly 250 employees and incumbent workers returning to school each year.
  • St. John's Hospital, Springfield
    Employees are eligible for up to $2,000 if scheduled for 64-80 hours per pay period per year and $1,500 if scheduled for 32-63 hours per pay period per year.
  • St. Mary’s Good Samaritan, Inc., Centralia
    Employees are offered $1,500 tuition reimbursement each year for completed college courses that relate to their current profession or for career advancement.
  • Touchette Regional Hospital, Centreville
    Offers tuition reimbursement to provide employees greater opportunities. Eligible employees who meet the appropriate criteria are reimbursed for relevant costs up to $6,000 per year.
