Tuition Reimbursement
Tuition reimbursement for all employees provides up to $350 per semester for tuition only. This is taxable income to the employee. The employee must agree to work at the hospital for six months after he or she has been reimbursed. The coursework must advance his/her education in the health field.

Tuition Assistance
This is available to employees tax free. The employee must apply for funding to pursue education to prepare them for a position that DMH believes will be a shortage in the future (in positions that are difficult to fill). Right now they are targeting pharmacy, physical therapy, ultra sound technology, nursing. The employee may receive assistance for several years up to $10,000 a year. He or she must agree to work for DMH for three to five years. Currently about two dozen people are receiving assistance. Most recipients do not work while they attend school.

Staff Scholarship Program
Full or part-time employees may apply for this program. A maximum of $3,500 per year for two years is given to cover costs including tuition, fees and books to those pursuing a profession needed within the hospital. Part time attendance will be evaluated and approved on an individual basis. Recipients must commit to continuing their employment for two years.

Mae Seward Sorrells Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship provides funds to students in need of financial assistance who pursue nursing training and agree to practice at Hillsboro Area Hospital. One $500 scholarship is awarded each year. Partial scholarships may be granted based on the student’s need and availability of funds.

Montgomery County Health Improvement Scholarship
Students who have completed one year in an accredited nursing program and demonstrate financial need may apply. Applicant receives $600 during third or fourth year of a four-year program or during the second year of a two-year program.

Tuition Reimbursement
The hospital offers tuition reimbursement for full or part-time workers. This can cover tuition and books. To be reimbursed, the employee must present a copy of his or her grades for each semester.

Hospital Auxiliary Funds
The Auxiliary provides up to $700 per semester, up to three times a year for hospital employees. They can be full or part-time employees working toward their RN degree at any level.

The Hospital Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund is funded by donations from individuals in the community. It primarily supports nursing students with tuition only. Applicants must interview and then commit to working a year for each year they are funded. They must apply every year. The Scholarship Fund provides approximately $36,000 every year to several students. Passavant uses this opportunity as a recruitment tool. If the student does not work at Passavant upon graduation, he or she must repay the scholarship.

Currently Passavant is providing support to four nurses working on their MSN degrees.

Educational Grants
These grants target critical need careers—right now Occupational Therapy and Radiology. The support averages $2,000 a year, up to $6,000 total and requires a work commitment. Applicants must be accepted into an accredited program before they apply. Applicants are expected to repay the funds if they don’t work for the hospital.

The hospital gives three $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors pursuing health occupations education.*

Continuing Medical Education Scholarships
Two scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded to those already enrolled in health career programs.

Tuition Reimbursement
St. John’s provides tuition reimbursement for current employees up to $2,500 of tuition reimbursement per calendar year.

Employee Education Incentive/Grant Program
Employees with at least one year of service to St. John’s, and who have been accepted into a nursing education program are eligible to apply for grant. St. John’s will pay 50% of employee’s base salary (excluding overtime and call pay) for up to two years while he or she is in school. Pay is calculated based on previous twelve months of employment with St. John’s Hospital. St. John’s will pay up to $5,000 per academic year, for full time employees, toward the cost of tuition, books and fees. This amount is prorated for part time employees.

The Perry Scholarship
The Perry Scholarship offers Registered Nurses grant monies up to $5,000 per calendar year for completion of an accredited degree program (BSN or MSN).

Sister Frances Cooke Nursing Scholarship
The Cooke Scholarship offers Registered Nurses salary support plus the total cost of tuition, fees and books to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing.

St. John’s College Scholarship: Students attending St. John’s College may qualify for scholarship/loans from $2,500 up to $12,000 for educational expenses.

Nursing Scholarship: Students attending any other accredited nursing school may qualify for scholarship/loans from $2,500 up to $5,000 for educational expenses.

In exchange for the nursing scholarships, applicants must make a commitment to work full time at St. John’s for 12 to 24 months (depending on the amount of the scholarship) after graduation and licensure as a Registered Nurse.

Barnabas Project
Phase I
of the Barnabas Project will pay the cost of taking the GED exam for any employee who wishes to do so.
Phase II of the Barnabas Project offers an interest free "learning incentive" to employees who have not had the opportunity to start a college education and have not been able to do so because of financial restrictions. The incentive will pay the cost of tuition, fees and books for up to two classes so that the employee can register for the classes.

This program targets high need areas (shortage areas primarily in nursing, anesthesiology, radiology, neuromuscular pharmacy, medical technologists.) The applicant must interview for funds ranging from $5,000-$20,000. He or she attends school full time, contracting with the hospital to work for a number of years depending upon the years of support each receives.
