Disproportionate Share Hospitals

Illinois disproportionate-share hospitals are located in inner-city neighborhoods and rural communities where few health care professionals practice. Taking care of the poor and uninsured is a big part of our mission. DSH is the health care safety net for our state's most vulnerable residents.

Illinois lawmakers recognize the importance of disproportionate-share hospitals to the patients and communities we serve. They have authorized targeted payments, in addition to regular Medicaid payments, to help keep these providers afloat so they can continue to fulfill their mission of caring for communities.

These payments are more critical today than ever before as managed care squeezes away the support formerly generated by privately insured and fee-for-service patients.
